Working the knobs at Harriet Brewing

Working the Magic at Harriet Brewing
Had a blast with the Pop Shop team as we took Harriet by storm.  And it was GREAT to meet so many fans of Jet Set Planet in person!  That was a real highlight for me!

If you haven't been to Harriet Brewing - GO!  And if you like vinyl, go on Tuesday nights and check out KFAI's Vinyl Voices' series, from 6 to 9pm.  The series is running through the year.  I'll be back at the end of October and again in early December.

Part of the Vinyl Voices Tuesday night series, the Pop Shop and Jet Set Planet will be entertaining the beer drinkers and doing their best to avoid the bottles thrown at the DJ booth.   KFAI (90.3 FM Minneapolis - 106.7 FM St. Paul) will be raffling off cool stuff, and the Ladies Love Vinyl posse will be in the house. Getting Sheared; Getting Gabored

jet set planet

Episode #475 Getting Sheared; Getting Gabored - during an Endless Bummer.  And who knew there was a cover version of a tune from the Seven Golden Men Soundtrack!

In this episode of Jet Set Planet, we track down Gabor Szabo doing a version of Some Velvet Morning!  That's worth the price of admission right there!  Plus Jimmy McGriff proves he's a Mean Machine and Harry Betts rides out the Endless Bummer.
This episode also features the debut of Lonnie Liston Smith on the program!  When you need an oily rubdown, this is the guy to call!

Oily Rubdown Jazz

Ok, if you haven't rubbed down your lovely lady or handsome gentleman in awhile - with a load of gooey, slick rubdown oil, smeared everywhere (careful of the new carpet!) then YOU are WAY overdue.  I mean if you rub them down they are obligated to rub YOU down!  See how it works?!!

From that section of my record library labeled "Oily, Rubdown Jazz,"  Enjoy!

Oh you can catch Lonnie and his friends on this edition of Jet Set Planet - Episode #475
(Archive available until 9/26/14 at the KFAI Audio Archives)

A Love Goddess, Lawrence Welk and me - at the Sugar Shack

In episode #474 of Jet Set Planet, we meet a Love Goddess, take a Swingin’ Fling, enjoy a Hot Fudge Sundae, enter the Tension Zone and visit the Sugar Shack all in the course of 90 minutes – that’s a lot of action for an hour and a half!  Plus, Harry Breuer ditches his vibro-thingy and picks up the patch cords, knobs and knife switches of a Moog Synthesizer when we hear from his LP The Happy Moog (not to be confused with the unhappy Gnome).  Full Playlist

This episode also features a TRAIN inspired set and also includes some really poor whistling from yours truly.  PLUS we hear the Power Sleeze of Ronnie Laws, the weird time signatures of Emil Richards, and some strange vocalese by the usually staid latin guitarist Charlie Byrd.

KFAI archives every show for up to two weeks.  This ONE available until 9/19/14. You can find archives of past shows at jetsetplanet.com

Some nice comments I received during this episode of Jet Set Planet:
"Your show is otherworldly, beautiful, and genius. You make me believe in radio. Your show makes me feel alive. Thank you."

WOW!

Oh, for you Thrift Store crate diggers out there, here's one you can still score for 49 cents.  If for no other reason, bye it for his version of Sugar Shack!

Like the mighty Thor raising his hammer to the sky and calling forth lightning from the heavens, here’s Lawrence Welk, baton in hand, comfortably walking, in comfortable shoes,  making his way to the Sugar Shack.
